Our classic old vine Cabernet is named after Ron's father Alwyn "Lofty" Liebich, who was a rather tall bloke.
Varietal: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Region: Rowland Flat, Barossa Valley.
Vineyard and Vinification:
Grown On CW's Block, planted by Clarence Walter “Darkie” Liebich in 1969, the vines suffer dead arm affliction
causing low yields of 0.5 tonne per acre, which greatly intensifies the fruit colour and flavour. Vines are hand-pruned and receive minimal
irrigation. As well as the low yield from dead arm affliction of around 0.5 tonne per acre, the intensity of flavour is enhanced by the non
clonal vineyard, the mixed clone producing wild variations among the vines in berry size and quantity of fruit. Grapes for the 2002 vintage
were picked at 15.4°Baume late in the season for optimum ripeness. Traditional hand plunging of the skins, basket pressing and non-filtration,
have achieved excellent colour & flavour extraction. Maturation in various aged French oak barrels has added complexity and perfectly balances
the seductive fruit.
Tasting Notes:
Deep crimson in colour. A delightfully pungent nose of blackberry, herbal pepper and violet overtones harmonise with the soft French oak.
The sweet fruit is balanced by the components of ready-aged oak and puckering tannin with the finish being extremely long and enticing. This
wine is justifiably essence of fruit, and will reward long term cellaring, although great drinking now.
Alcohol: 15.4% v/v.
Cellar: 15+ years.
Closure: Mostly cork and some screw cap.
Limited quantities of the 1998-2001 vintages also available
