A wine named after Samuel Hoffmann, a master potter
and craftsman who settled on our property in 1848. Remains of his activities can
be found today as shards, but alas, very few whole pots still exist. This Merlot
planted in 1989 by Ron Liebich, began the new vineyard in the winery block.
Varietal: 100% Merlot.
Region: Rowland Flat, Barossa Valley
Vineyard and Vinification: Merlot vines are trained on 5 foot high single wire
trellis system to maximise ripening the fruit. Vines are grafted onto two
varieties of rootstocks and now yield between 3 to 5 tonnes per acre depending
on the season. A relatively low yield of 2 tonnes/ acre, in a warmer than normal
vintage, has produced fruit with opulent flavours. Traditional techniques of
production and subsequent 24 months maturation in various aged French Vosques
and Nevers oak barrels have resulted in a Merlot of weight and
complexity.
Tasting Notes:
Colour: Deep crimson in colour with
browning edges.
Nose: The seductive nose of ripe mulberry and
pomegranate aromas integrated with soft wood tannins, draw you into the ripe
fruit and spicy flavours.
Palate: Fine-grain tannins, viscosity and a long,
rounded finish feature in this wine.
Alcohol: 15.0% v/v.
Cellar: now to 10 years.
Closure: Natural cork and screw cap
